Just for the record. It usually takes the western imperialist warmongers years if not quite decades to finally own up. They got it wrong in Iraq ,they got it wrong in Afghanistan. From the UK’s Minister with responsibility for Afghanistan – gleaned from the Daily Telegraph of 6 January 2015.
Britain made terrible mistakes during its campaign in Helmand and at times military strategy in Afghanistan was “completely bonkers” a former minister has said.
The decision to send troops to fight in the southern province in 2006 was taken on “badly flawed” intelligence, Kim Howells said.
Mr Howells, who was a Foreign Office minister with responsibility forAfghanistan at the time, said he was given such poor quality information before the deployment that during one trip, he was forced to hitch a ride there on an Afghan helicopter to see for himself.
He was warned by an American colonel in the provincial capital that the British would face a confusing, deadly province where it was unclear who was shooting at you, or for what reason.
Yet back in London, the Government appeared “sanguine and relaxed” about the mission to send more than 3,600 troops to support reconstruction efforts.
Mr Howells told the Commons defence committee “terrible mistakes were being made” during the early years of the campaign.
He said one “very distinguished and clever general” had explained the Army’s ink blot strategy for how security and stability would seep across the province from British-garrisoned areas.
He told the committee, which is investigating how Whitehall decision-making failed during the campaign: “It was completely bonkers.”
Politicians had been too reluctant to question military advice and the decision to go to Helmand had been made at the highest levels of Government with little consultation.
He said: “Once a war has been started, there’s always a tendency to say let the generals get on with it, they know best. Within the MoD I always had the impression that the last thing they needed was interfering politicians.”
Still careerist detritus such as Howells ( once upon a time a genuine Left-Winger supported by the National Union of Mineworkers ) can always seem to give the impression that they are about to plead Mea Culpa. Howells is much like his Party Comrades Messrs. Blunkett and Straw who almost but not quite toyed with the notion of accepting direct responsibility for the cataclysmic inner -EU migration disaster that engulfed and continues to engulf the UK 11 years on from the act of national suicide they helped carry out back in 2004. That too ,no doubt was ” bonkers “.
